CIIIC Kern

Demand-driven, practice-oriented research into immersive experiences. Consortia of universities of applied sciences and businesses work together on research questions that come straight from practice.

CIIIC Kern is the core programme within CIIIC for demand-driven, practice-oriented research into immersive experiences (IX). The funding scheme brings together universities of applied sciences, SMEs and public sector organisations to answer concrete research questions from practice and to test and validate methods for IX applications.

What is CIIIC Kern?

In CIIIC Kern projects, consortia of research organisations, SMEs and public sector organisations work together on research that arises directly from a practical question. The aim is to deepen our knowledge of the effectiveness and responsible deployment of immersive experiences, and to underpin working methods and approaches that makers and end users can put to use in practice.

Who is CIIIC Kern for?

The funding scheme is aimed at researchers at universities of applied sciences and universities who want to carry out practice-oriented research into IX applications, at immersive makers who want to underpin their methods with research, and at public sector organisations in healthcare, education, culture and at local authorities that want to deploy IX and need validated approaches. An application is submitted by a researcher affiliated with a higher education institution.

What does the funding scheme cover?

Each project can receive a grant of up to €300,000 for a duration of roughly eighteen months to two years. The partners' own contribution amounts to 50% of the total project costs; this is higher than for CIIIC Start, which serves as a small-scale entry point. The available budget and the exact conditions are set for each application round.

Examples of research questions

Consider questions such as: how can public values be safeguarded in IX applications? What are the prerequisites for the responsible deployment of IX within public sector organisations? And how can IX methods be validated for specific application domains?
